In 1998, the former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University merged to form the new "Zhejiang University". The alumni of these four universities subsequently all became alumni of the new Zhejiang University, with a total number of 600,000. The alumni have made important contributions to the establishment and development of the university by offering advice, nurturing linkages and making generous donations to their alma mater.
The Zhejiang University Alumni Association was registered by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Civil Affairs in May and December 1999, respectively. The inaugural and first alumni congress was held on January 16, 2000. It officially announced the establishment of the Zhejiang University Alumni Association, adopted its constitution and elected its leading bodies. In April 2013, the Association was evaluated by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China and in December 2015, following the recommendation of the Ministry of Education, it was designated as a "National Advanced Social Organization" by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
At present, the Zhejiang University Alumni Association has a network of 140 local associations spanning across North America, Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia and Africa as well as in 31 provinces and cities across China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. They provide a home for an ever-increasing body of Zhejiang University students and alumni around the globe, serving Alma Mater and repaying society.
