主题:Nightmare Egalitarianism: Commensuration, Autonomy and Imagination
时间:2025年5月20日(周二)14:00-16:00
地点:浙江大学紫金港西区成均苑8幢1127
简介:Egalitarianism often is a nightmare, many anthropologists have noted. The mechanisms that guarantee equality can include everything from ridicule to envy, sorcery, and physical violence. If the bourgeois needs to ‘keep up with the Joneses’, the peasant envies the ‘limited good’ of the neighbours. Equality means entirely different things in each setting, but drawing equivalences is negatively connotated in all – and egalitarianism here and elsewhere shares a special relation with violence. This collaborative project aims at a framework to understand different forms of egalitarianism through the forces of commensuration they are based on, and the forms of autonomy and imagination they allow. I’ll introduce the core concepts as outlined in collaboration with Natalia Buitron (Cambridge) and Florian Muhlfried (Tiblisi), and then case studies from the Wa State, Malawi (Farrell), India (Wilby), and Archaeology (Hadad).
